What is your perception of social media, do you think it is a fad or the biggest shift since the Industrial Revolution?

In my opinion social media is great and has brought the way people connect with each other to a whole new level.  That said I still think it has a lot of shortfalls.  Children now grow up to be more antisocial than ever and while social networks allow the already popular and successful to thrive it punishes the socially awkward.  Some forms of Social Media have amazing benefits to society however such as You-tube.  I am one of the many that only gets their information from You-tube and Stumble, Reddit etc.  However sites such as Facebook or twitter serve very little purpose and I think they are going to be the cause of many issues in the newer generation.  These issues range from attention span to obesity to plan inability to communicate in the workplace.  Honestly how can you get a job when you text and IM more messages in a day then you speak.  Yes I grew up with it,  yes I can say I have been drawn to the addiction of Facebook.  You can learn to moderate the use of these websites.  I've seen people that can sit and stare at Facebook for hours just to see if someone will update there status or post something of warrant. These people in truth could be doing much more productive things such as listening to the lecture (as not to bother their classmates later with questions or doing homework) so they don’t have to freak out last minute (blaming the teacher for their bad marks).  It along with text messaging has brought socializing to a much lower level and will cause major problems in the future generations.  Therefore I think that it will be split between people who realize Social Medias worth and don't abuse and the ones who use it as a drug and can't handle the distraction of it.

  1. Yes I see a lot of people at my school who pretty distracted by facebook, and even loose marks because of it. It definitely has peoples attention.

  2. I agree with you there will be no face to face with people in the future because of the kids that are growing up with the social media sites and interacting though them. Also in another way social media sites can be dangerous to younger generations if you can meet people online and not know anything about them, freakly i would say. The social media sites like you said people are sitting and waiting for posts or changes in peoples statuses can be a huge problem with people being over weight because of sitting at the computer all day and not doing something active. 100 percent agree with you.

  3. I definitely agree with you that social media is making children more antisocial. I feel old saying this but kids these days don't know how to have fun with the simpler things in life. I feel like kids are also growing up much faster these days because they are constantly being exposed to messages on the facebook and twitter and youtube and whatever else that they probably don't need to be seeing. When I was younger, playing outside interacting with friends was fun. Now, messaging each other on facebook seems to entertain people for hours on end.

  4. I agree with you to an extent, but what I think is that, equal to the disadvantage of social media there are also great advantages. Its just up to the user to make up their mind and stay in control.

  5. This is exactly what I am saying, but there are so many who can't seem to get past this point. It harms them in the long run. I'm not saying these people wouldn't be distracted anyways in some form but Facebook plays a major role in it today.

  6. Very good points made here by Mark. Social media has indeed made it hard for people to communicate face to face which something we all do daily. People have become so socially awkward that 1 in 8 couples have met on a social networking site. People no longer know how to generate conversations with the other person in front of them as they would rather like to have their keyboard and monitor or cellphone in front of them. I believe this blog was a just a point of view of social media and some of its down falls. All in all I still believe it is great for people but users need to use it in moderation.

  7. Mark made some great points about social media. It does connect people in a lot of ways but, as everything in the world, it has its faults. People in future generations will be more anti-social then are now with Facebook and text messaging. Also, they're putting out information that nobody really cares about, like what they are eating at the moment. It just all comes down to, like Mark stated, people who don't abuse the social media sites and the ones who use it as distraction.
